The Australian Government and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO)
have recognised the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) as a particularly sensitive
area requiring the highest possible level of environmental protection.
The Australian Government
enacted legislation for compulsory pilotage in the Inner Route of the
Great Barrier Reef between Cape York and Cairns and the Hydrographers
Passage. Aviation Tourism Australia has the exclusive contract with
Torres Pilots, Australia's leading provider of Marine Pilots, to transfer
marine pilots ship-to-shore, shore-to-ship for all ships entering into
and exiting out of Hay Point and Dalrymple Bay in Mackay.
Our combined services are unique in their capability of providing two
twin-engined helicopters, guaranteeing a 24 hour 365 days a year operation
with the highest level of service and safety standards.
AVTA has the exclusive contract with Torres Pilots to provide marine pilot transfers to ships entering and exiting the Great Barrier Reef through Hydrographers Passage, 120 nautical miles from the mainland. This passage is a natural channel and is the gateway to the world's largest coal producing ports; Darymple and Hay Point.
Marine Pilots are responsible for navigating the world's largest bulk carrier ships safely through the Great Barrier Reef. The Australian Government and the International Maritime Organisation enacted legislation for compulsory pilotage through the Great Barrier Reef to maintain the highest level of environmental protection.
A very limited opportunity is available from Hamilton Island for guests wanting to experience landing on a bulk carrier ship (up to 200,000 tonne) to deliver an experienced and professional Marine Pilot. Contact our Reservations Department to make further enquiries.
